From 1965 to 1968, the Ketchikan High School basketball team ruled Alaska high school basketball. The team won the Alaska State Championship for 4 years in a row, and won the Southeast Championship for 5 years in a row - 1964 to 1968.
In 1968, Ketchikan's John Brown became the first player in state history to play on a State Championship team for all four years of his high school career. In 1967, John's mother got a tape recorder and began recording her son's games.
These games were taped on a reel-to-reel machine via a microphone placed in front of the speaker of an AM radio tuned to KTKN. The station was owned by Midnight Sun Broadcasters at the time.
Very little of Ketchikan's early broadcast history remains. Stations recorded over and discarded tapes all the time and no tapes were saved for posterity. These tapes, recorded by John Brown's mother and found in a box in storage, are the earliest recordings of KTKN broadcasts known to exist.
Besides the memorable basketball broadcasts, the tapes also have preserved the voices of many of Alaska's legendary sportscasters including Ketchikan's Mike Owen Hunt and Tom Friesen, Fairbanks' Steve Agbaba, Juneau's Bill Walley, Anchorage's Dick Lobdell, and Len Harrington from Prince Rupert. There's also a broadcast that originated from KSEW in Sitka, a station no longer on the air. KTKN announcers Doug Patterson and Keith Kermit are heard on most of the local commercials.
John Brown is being considered for induction into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame this year. Public voting is open until November 25, 2009. Please visit the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame and cast your ballot: http://www.alaskasportshall.org
