THE KETCHIKAN PUBLIC LIBRARY invites kids in grades K-12 to come down to the library and read to earn credit to pay off overdue fines. Kids can check in at the children's library desk once day and read up to an hour, with $1 credited for every fifteen minutes. (C)

With speech and reading problems on the rise, research has shown that children who are read to and engaged in conversation daily learn thousands more vocabulary words than children who only watch TV or use computers, giving them the skills they need to learn to read.
